Sure, VLC and MPC play "everything" and are free. But honestly - their user interface is a mess, it's hard to figure out where to customize playback and settings. They work fine for a basic user who just wants to play a file, but lacks a lot in the options and features.Zoom Player has a ton of features, while making it easy to find the basic settings. The Advanced menu is huge, and it also has a search function to easily find the settings you want which is a huge bonus. The intergrated Install Center allows you to download all the codecs you need to play 99% of all video out there: LAV Filter, FFDShow, MadVR, AC3filter and so on. There's no need to download those huge and confusing "codec-packs" that in my experience just mess up your playback. There's a free version as well, available on the developer site, and it does basically everything the Steam version does, but you get some extra features here, and you are supporting a quality product (which IMO is important as well). The most lacking feature might be the network streaming, like VLC has. But then again VLC was built from the ground up to be a networked media player.I've been using Zoom for years now, and it outclasses all the other media players I've tried.Personally I'd rather get it from the developers themselves, but having it in Steam is a nice addition.. This player cannot play legally-owned store-bought blu-ray discs.. Purchased this in steam sales. I have been looking for a media player to run all my music & movies. This so far is ticking all the right boxes. I was running VLC for my media and old school winamp for my music. So far Zoom Player is looking like a winner!. Only 13 minutes of usage in Steam, but this is my main video-player ever since I bought it.Zoom works like a lot of free players, but the smoothing of movie is where it excells. Playing MP4 files with ZOOM compared to WinAMP and MS Media Player *blegh* is a difference between having a smooth playback and blocks from time to time.Only problem I think is configuration. Somehow the settings have been made way too complicated, even when it comes to simple stuff like 'play all videos from start' are hard to find.... Used the Freeware version of this program for just about as long as it was first available. I've tried every major freeware video player on the market, all of which are useable, none of which are as customizable or feature rich as Zoom Player. I have a lot of old and new video I play using this program, so I have a lot of hours on record on Steam but probably 10x the amount of hours on the freeware, so I figured it was about time I help support the developers and buy the full version here on steam. It's worth every penny at the current full price they charge here, getting it on special just makes it that much of a better deal. Don't bother with the reviews with 0.1hrs. If those people could actually read the feature list properly, they would understand that this player does not play back copy protected Blu-ray discs because that requires expensive licensing that would probably at least double the cost of this program. Also do not listen to thor32123's review, because this program plays every major format available as long as you have the proper filters and codecs installed on your computer. I have played back: mpg, mp4, avi, ogm, mkv, rm, rmv, rmvb, asf, wmv, qt, etc. Plays them all fine. I don't use this for audio, but every audio file I have accidently played on this program has played fine: mp3, wav, ogg, flac, etc.Pros: Feature Rich & customizable well beyond the available freeware players out there Excellent Playlist feature, light years better than every other player I have tried Plays almost everything, copy protected Blu-ray being the only format I am aware of it doesn'tCons: Doesn't play copy protected Blu-ray, but it doesn't claim it does either. Doesn't offer enough at the price point over freeware players for the casual media playback users. Steam Updates are sometimes buggy with Anti-virus software, requiring disabling your AV prior to updatingOverall: 9/10While no copy protected Blu-ray playback support is a con, the program does not claim it does so you cannot fault the program for that. The problematic updates through Steam are a hastle, but more of a nitpick than a real con. Most programs tell you to disable your AV prior to installation as a precaution anyway, but this was the first time I have had a problem with installing an update or any program for many years now that were caused by an Anti-virus program. If you're a casual media playback user, you'll be fine with any of the freeware players out there, VLC being the best 'Video player for Dummies' out there. If you absolutely have to have copy protected Blu-ray playback, look elsewhere. I have a set top player for my Blu-rays as well as a software player that came with my BD-R Writer so I did not need nor care about Blu-ray playback. I've used the software player that came with my burner once, and that was just to test if it was actually a fully useable version or just a trial (it's a full version). Any time I play a Blu-ray, I do it with my set top player. If you're a power user, or not afraid of learning how to work with this program (not that difficult), there's no better video player out there available at this price point or cheaper.. I bought this a while back during a https://groupees.com/software2 bundle and at the time it was a few dollars loss. Zoom Player would only play a few formats making VLC far superior. I decided to see if the program has aged and matured and it has, by ALOT! Now it has played all formats I have tried throwing at it. It also has a nice feature for my anime where it highlights the intro and outro in the progress bar so you can quickly navigate past them if you wish. Needless to say since I have the program and it has matured enough for me to toss VLC to the side for now. Although for the price of $30 I could not recommend this program, maybe for $10 or a max of $15 other than that I say just grab VLC.. Purchased this in steam sales. I have been looking for a media player to run all my music & movies. This so far is ticking all the right boxes. I was running VLC for my media and old school winamp for my music. So far Zoom Player is looking like a winner!. Only plays DVDs in low resolution. Announcing Zoom Player v11.1: Hi Everyone,Since Zoom Player version 11 was released nearly two months ago, we invested most of the time in enhancing usability, improving stability, fixing bugs and optimizing the code to squeeze out more performance. But of course, this would not be Zoom Player if the new version did not include some cool new features! The biggest feature in version 11.1 is the long requested support for Direct3D Pixel Shaders scripts when using MadVR as the video renderer.Pixel Shaders are image processing scripts that are applied in real-time using GPU (display card) processing power. You can now create your own pixel shader presets and switch between presets in real time using keyboard macros or through the options dialog. If you are using a remote control device, you can now use the Play and Stop functions within the fullscreen navigation interfaces to start playback (bypassing the mini-menu in media library thumbview mode) and close the navigation interface.I also took the time to update the Event Ghost PC System Automation tool Zoom Player plugin to include all the new functionality introduced in recent versions of Zoom Player all the way up to version 11.1. I can personally recommend Event Ghost, I use it myself to interface a remote control with Zoom Player.Check out the complete change list for v11.1:http://inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_whatsnew.shtml. Demo version coming early next week: We are working on the demo version and hope to have it ready early next week.Stay tuned!. Announcing Zoom Player v9.4.1: Legend : "*" = New "+" = Change "-" = Fix--- What's new in Zoom Player v9.4.1: * Clicking the selected item count checkbox in the playlist, file browsing and media library fullscreen navigation interfaces now acts as a shortcut to the extended file selection page. * New scenecut editor "Pause Playback" entry type. * Introduced stricter sub-type format checking to prevent errors. + Auto-Showing the control bar when the mouse cursor is moved to the top or bottom of the screen (selectable in the options) now triggers when the mouse cursor is up to 4 pixels away from the top/bottom instead of the just the top/bottom pixel. - Trying to play all files in a directory did not ignore unknown file extensions, adding them to the playlist instead. - With the "Auto-Size User Interface to maintain Video Aspect Ratio" setting enabled, triggering an action OSD (like "Pause") would cause the window to auto-resize. - A bad sub-type in the H.264 video decoder smart play profile could have caused issues under certain conditions. - Selecting "all matching multi-part files" from fullscreen navigation interfaces could select non-file entries such as "Previous Directory" and others.--- * The Complete Change list history can be found on-line at: http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_whatsnew_archive.shtml. Announcing Zoom Player v9.4: Legend : "*" = New "+" = Change "-" = Fix--- What's new in Zoom Player v9.4: * New feature to load DirectShow filters directly from a DLL even if the filter is not registered/installed on the system (Adv. Options / Playback / Smart Play / Info & DLL Paths). The external DLL paths are searched when Zoom Player tries to create a filter that is not registered with the operating system. Note: + All paths are relative to Zoom Player's EXE's folder. + Some filters may require registry entries to work. * New "<" icon next to a fullscreen navigation interface's icon/title to provide a clear visual indicator that clicking the location navigates to the previous navigation page. * New setting (Adv. Options / Interface / Fullscreen Navigation / Customization) to set the scrollbar's width. * New clickable icons for "Play all files in this directory" and "Randomly Play all files in this directory". * New "Play" icon next to playable entries in multiple fullscreen navigation interfaces (media library, file browser, etc). * You can now select MadVR as the Windows Media DRM playback video renderer. + Large playlist load time has been optimized by up to 200%. + You can now single-click previous directory icon to go to the previous directory. + New "Unknown" icon now used with unknown file types in file listing fullscreen navigation interfaces (media library, file browser, etc). + When loading a playlist comprised of multiple playlists, each with a sort method specified in the playlist, the playlists will now be individually sorted and appended instead of the final playlist being sorted. + The fullscreen navigation scrollbar width is no longer dependant on the width of the dialog as that didn't make sense rotating displays (such as tablets). The scroll bar width is now fixed size. + The icon used to access the fullscreen navigation interface's functions page has been modified to more clearly indicate the action taken by clicking the icon. + On the fullscreen navigation function pages of the media library and file browsing interfaces, on the "Add to Playlist" entry, the icon has been changed from a right arrow to a playlist icon to better indicate that clicking the icon opens the playlist navigation interface. + The playlist icon has been replaced with a new, polished design. - The "Create Contact Sheet" feature got completely broken in v9.3. - The fullscreen navigation interfaces did not resize when rotating the screen orientation. - When playing a media with external audio track files, the used filters may not have been released properly from memory, causing all sorts of possible issues (for example, MadVR would not release it's overlay, covering the video area when playing audio files afterwards). - The fullscreen playlist navigation interface's font did not adjust in size to match the "Navigation Line Count" setting and was not perfectly centered within each line. - The Alt+"S" keyboard macro that opens the subtitle configuration page did not work if the "XySubFilter" subtitle renderer filter was used. - When using a detached control bar on the primary screen to display preview thumbnails from a video playing on a secondary screen, the thumbnails would always appear below the timeline, even when there was space above it. - When using a detached control bar on the primary screen to display preview thumbnails from a video playing on a secondary screen, the thumbnails would initially appear on the secondary until the mouse was moved at least 1 pixel over the timeline. - The previous fullscreen navigation customization settings were not restored if the options dialog was closed using the "Cancel" button. - Resizing the fullscreen station navigation interface width could cause the station name to overlap the station format and bitrate text fields. - The Install Center would list an update as available even if a newer version was already installed if the update's build number was higher than the currently installed version's build number, for example: v9.3.0.102 would appear newer than v9.4.0.3 - The "DefaultSettings.exe" file did not reset the Steam Edition's settings.--- * The Complete Change list history can be found on-line at: http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_whatsnew_archive.shtml. Announcing Zoom Player v9.5: [ Change Highlights ] - Many fullscreen navigation interface touch enhancements targeted at tablet users. - User-selected pattern background image for customizable fullscreen navigation interfaces. - New control bar optional buttons. - Integrated text viewer. - NSV local-playback support. - Bug fixes.[ Complete Change List ]http://inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_whatsnew.shtml.
